Galleries of the World |
|
There are so many
wonderful art galleries in the world, it makes your head spin ... we
can't possibly list more than a few.
One of the boons of the
Internet is that even those of us who can't travel to all those
countries, can now wander through the great galleries and enjoy the

It is only fitting that
our first link should be to a virtual gallery:
The Web Gallery of
Art, which contains over 11,600 digital reproductions
of European paintings and sculptures created between the years 1150 and
1800.
A considerable number of
the pictures are annotated and biographies of the significant artists
are given. A versatile search engine allows you to find pictures in the
collection. |

The
London
National Gallery’s permanent collection spans the period from
about 1250 to 1900 and consists of Western European paintings.
The entire National Gallery permanent collection and
long-term loans are illustrated and described in the collection online.

The
National Portrait Gallery,
London, was founded in 1856 to collect the likenesses of famous British
men and women. Today its collection is the most comprehensive in the
world. The site is searchable by sitter or artist – if you need a
picture of a famous Pom, this is the place to look. |

|
The
Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, treasure house of
the Netherlands.
This site offers some great virtual tours of the
collection. |

|
A medieval fortress, the palace of the kings of
France, and a museum for the last two centuries, the
Louvre
collections incorporate works dating from the birth of the great antique
civilisations right up to the first half of the XIXth century. |
|
|
The
Prado, Madrid,
has one of the largest art collections in the world, and is best known
for its diverse assortment of works by Velasquez, Goya and El Greco.
|
|
|
The
Hermitage, St
Petersburg, is not so much a museum as a number of palaces,
housing the magnificent collection of art treasures built up by the
Czars over centuries. (Plus what the Comrades looted after WW2!) There
are over 3 million items in the collection. |
